The Accidental Dragon

by Laurie Weaver

Tommy meant to make a snake
From his purple clay.
But he made a good mistake
On that sunny day.

Wings came out...
And a snout...
And fire came alive
from his shaping hands,
and understand, now
Tommy's only five!

"What's this?", he thought
"What have I made?"
"It's not what I meant to do.
"Maybe purple isn't right
And I ought try Blue!"

But roll and pinch and shape away,
It just couldn't be denied
A fierce and noble dragon
Was what really was inside.

It sprouted up from Tommy's hand
Alive and fine and true.
"What's this then, Tommy?" Daddy asked
When Tommy's art was through.

"A dragon, Daddy!"
Tommy said, feeling mighty glee.
"Funny thing," Daddy said,
"It looks like...
...just a snake to me."
